Where to take your kids during the Holidays

23 Dec

Christmas for children means no school,  Christmas  trees, decors, Santa and most of all…GIFTS!

And as parents we want our children to see and feel the magic of Christmas.  Here are some places you can take your kids for some good family bonding and great photo-ops!

Miniature Nativity Exhibits at the Holy Family Chapel (Exhibit Hall) in Greenhills Shopping Center

This is to remind us that Christmas is celebrating the birth of Christ

The Christmas COD Display – Greenhills

Growing up, our parents would bring us to watch the moving Christmas display at COD.  Now you can replicate this practice with your own kids at Greenhills :)  For me, the best vantage point is the parking lot fronting unimart.

Light Show at the Ayala Triangle Gardens

They have hourly shows daily for the whole of December.  My kids loved it, even my toddler was mesmerized by all the lights.  Plus there are a lot of restaurants within the area where you can have a nice family dinner before or after watching the show.  Our faves are BonChon Chicken, Kanin Club and Wee Nam Kee.  Then for dessert, there’s Golden Spoon.

Synchronized lights & sounds show

Christmas Village & Snow Shower at Eastwood City

We went on a Sunday.  Had mass and an early dinner, then we headed to the Christmas Village around 7:30.  The “snow” shower started at 8pm and lasted a couple of minutes.  We then went back to the main mall just in time to catch the fireworks display at around 8:30. :)

Christmas Village

Snow Shower: all Saturdays & Sundays of December, 6pm and 8pm

My toddler catching the "snow" ;)

Santa visits in malls around the Metro

Christmas is really one of the busiest times for parents, but it’s also when we can capture most wonderful memories with our children.  Seeing the awe and delight in their faces is really priceless.

Varekai

19 Jul

Adhering to age-old circus tradition, Cirque du Soleil’s Varekai is aptly staged in a huge air-conditioned circus tent in the Quirino Grandstand.

We arrived early and were surprised to see most of the seats were already occupied.  The atmosphere was abuzz with excitement, in anticipation of the most talked about show in town.

Varekai’s story is about the Fall of Icarus – a young man who plummets from the sky and is parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest.  In a kaleidoscopic world populated by fantastical creatures, this young man sets off on an extraordinary adventure. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of all possibilities, begins an inspired incantation to life rediscovered.

The word Varekai means “wherever” in the Romany language of the gypsies, the universal wanderers. This production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and the infinite passion of those who journey along the path that leads to Varekai.

The show area is fairly small, which makes it more intimate and envelops us into the mystery of the show.  With the beautiful costumes, dramatic set design and lighting, haunting music and the mystifying acts, I was swooning with awe and delight.

Of course, a circus act would not be complete without a clown.  In this show, they have a man and a woman who performed funny, absurd skits.  Not your typical circus clowns, they had everyone laughing and provided light moments in the show.

But of course, the highlights of Verakai are the acrobatic acts.  Let me share with you some of my favorite scenes from the show:

Flight of Icarus – I loved the drama and agility of Icarus as he elegantly flies, swings and dives in his net.  It showed the sensitivity and vulnerability of the character.

Water Meteors – These 3 young acrobats were just amazing.  They whirl, toss and catch these ropes with metal meteors attached to the ends, while performing daring acrobatic acts.  It was fascinating to watch them, which made me wonder how early these kids started their training.

Aerial Straps – Two remarkable men, suspended by wrist straps, glide gracefully, while doing exciting acrobatics with precision and power.  With a double strap, they meld in mid-air, united in a series of striking acrobatic silhouettes.

The Finale (Russian Swings) – This impressive act was so heart thumping and breathtaking!  Two Russian swings hurl the acrobats high into the air, and they are caught by their partners or land into billowing fabrics.  The audacity and sheer daring of this act had everybody shouting.  The jumps got higher and bigger, with men soaring mid-air to land from one moving swing to the other!  It was surely an unforgettable scene.

Overall the show is a feast for the senses.  With its sensual fusion of drama, contrasting colors, astonishing stunts and stunning acrobatics, this spectacular show is a definite must see!

FORTyFIED

11 Jul

This post is long overdue.  I’ve been meaning to write about this, but being the overworked, frazzled mom that I am, time quickly slipped out of my hands, again… :)

I am an avid fan of  FORTyFIED, a weekly column in The Philippine Star headlined by Cecile Lopez Lilles.  So I was really excited to hear that she has compiled some of her articles in a book, which was launched last April at the Filipinas Heritage Library in Makati City.  The book launch opened with welcoming remarks by UST Publishing House Director Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, followed by a charming speech from Lilles’ daughter, Isabel.  The successful event was attended by many of the author’s family, relatives, friends, colleagues, and enthusiastic column readers.

Cecile Lilles is a columnist for The Philippine Star.  She is a mother, a homemaker and a writer.  Born in Manila, raised in Davao, and schooled in the U.S., Cecile currently lives in Manila where she cooks, runs, and writes about gender differences and the joys and tribulations in everyday human relationships.

The Author

Her book is a collection of essays and follows the author as she attempts to understand the male psyche – from adventures at the hardware store, potential suitors who ran away after a midnight screening of The Amityville Horror, meeting her future son-in-law, observing man dates, and cheering for tennis players.  Equally witty and humorous, Lilles’ essays reflect her belief that men, despite being “the most complex (supposedly) rational beings – impossible to classify, qualify, quantify, or second-guess,” are as interesting and riveting as women are to the male order.

I’ve read the whole book and here are some of my favorites: Speed is Their Music, Deconstructing Male Admiration, Traveling with a Man, The Pocanhontas Phenomenon, Real Man Don’t Dance; or Do They?, Why Men Think Women are Senseless, God is in the Details, The Girl-Boy Conundrum, Who Ordered the Ambiance and He Doesn’t Know it Yet.  These stories stem from her own experiences as a mother, wife, daughter and friend.  As a fellow mom and contemporary woman, I quickly resonated with many of Cecile’s perplexing, critical, yet often-times amusing encounters and observations on the male species.  I definitely subscribe to many of her viewpoints and I’m sure you will too.

Here are some reviews and comments from various personalities:

Writer Chi Chi Lizot says “Its takes “balls” to write about men. Cecile’s Fortyfied is a funny and witty attempt at exploring their world. She has succeeded in more ways than one in this compilation of little stories of little and big boys. An easy and entertaining read for men and women alike that I thoroughly enjoyed.”

Poet, fictionist, essayist, and Ateneo Professor Rayvi Sunico says, “At a time when gender politics and–horrors–gender wars have attained the dubious status of cliché and sound byte the sane, deft touch of these essays by Ms. Lilles reminds us that the opposite sex is best understood with honesty, candour and above all, wit.”

Louie Ysmael, hailed asManila’s undisputed Nightlife King observed “Cecile sure has the insight on men.  Nothing beats living through it and being able to nail it accurately.”

As for me, FORTyFIED is certainly an enjoyable read.  The author’s perspectives and witty musings are tastefully written.  Moreover, the essays are funny, insightful and very entertaining.  I highly recommend this book to all smart, passionate, and open-minded women out there!

Fortyfied is the first book in the Personal Chronicles series of books to be published this year by the UST Publishing House. It is available at the UST Publishing House, or through online orders at avalon.ph, and in major bookstores nationwide.

You can also find new FORTyFIED articles every Wednesday in the Lifestyle section (For Men) of The Philippine Star.

Are we prepared for the “Big One”?

14 Mar

I’ve always been one of those paranoid, OC moms.  When staying in hotels, the first things I look for are the emergency exits, I then memorize its location (e.g. how many doors from mine, right or left side).   I also don’t like staying in floors higher than the 12th (coz the fire truck ladder won’t be able to reach the higher floors, although this precaution is useless if the whole structure pancakes during a quake) and if I can have it my way, I would choose street view (coz fire trucks can’t drive thru the pool right?), although my husband always insists on pool or sea view.  The next thing I do is wipe down the switches and TV remote control with alcohol, as some research has shown that these are usually the dirtiest things in a hotel room. Yuck!

At home, we have our family first aid kit and I’ve also given our househelp their own kits.  My 10 year old also has her own kit in her school locker (which includes water, canned goods, flashlight, batteries, tissue, meds and a blanket).   We also have a “panic bag” where I have flashlights, canned goods, meds, batteries, betadine and first aid stuff.  But these are just some simple precautions I do.  After the Japan quake last week, I have taken stock on what I have and can do in times of emergencies.  Needless to say, I have beefed up our Safety and Survival kits and would like to share them with you.

Going back to the topic of earthquakes, we all know that we are also situated in the “Ring of Fire” and we should all be ready if and when the big one comes… CNN released a report last year that documented Manila’s earthquake vulnerability citing the Marikina Valley fault as “ready to give in,” according to Geologist Mahar Lagmay, an associate professor at the National Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of the Philippines. Lagmay said a 7.0-earthquake would be like a “1,000 Nagasaki atom bomb explosion underneath the Earth’s surface along the Marikina Valley Fault.”

Meanwhile, an Inquirer report published today, March 14, listed catastrophic scenarios cited by Pacific Strategies and Assessments should a high-magnitude earthquake hit Manila, which could include: an estimated 117,000 homes that would “either collapse or suffer damage, rendering 1.2 million homeless,” damaged water reservoirs and purification plants that would immediately cut 4,000 water supply points, and “at least 30 kilometers of electric cables cut, removing the supply of power instantly across the metropolis,” among others.

Now these are scary facts and do you already know what to do?  I myself am confused on what is the “right” survival strategy.  Do we “drop, cover and hold on? Or do we follow Doug Copp’s “Triangle of Life” (The theory is that  we should lie in a fetal position beside a bed, sofa, car etc., since a large object will create a void.  But this theory had been scratched up by some as a “myth” and has been debunked by Rocky Lopes of the American Red Cross).   Now I want my family and I to be safe but I am really torn and confused… so if you have any inputs on this, please feel free to share them with us.

With so many natural disasters and every day occurrence around us, I really think that we should all be ready and knowledgeable on first aid procedures.  I have always wanted to take a first aid class for the longest time, but I had always been too busy.  But now, I’ve realized that we should never be too busy for our family’s safety.  So I called up the Philippine National Red Cross Safety Services and inquired on their classes.  The woman who answered, Nits was very helpful.   And these are what she told me… To avail of the First Aid for Homebodies group class, there should be a minimum of 14 participants.  The class is 2 days (one day for first aid and the next day for CPR) and the fee is Php860 per pax (520 for first aid and 340 for CPR), these includes workbooks and certificates.  We should also be the one to provide a venue.  And the classes will be scheduled 1-2 weeks after group registration fee has been paid.

Now I plan to bring my yaya along too (this is especially important as they are the ones in charge of our children when we’re not home) and will also be inviting some family and friends to join.  I am also extending this invitation to you my mommy and daddy readers.   So for those who want to join, pls send me your name, mobile number, how many pax and also if u prefer weekdays (pls choose between Mon. & Tues. or Wed. & Thurs.) or weekends (Sat. & Sun.).   You can either email me (momtrepreneur1@yahoo.com or put the info in the comment box).   Also if you have a venue you can let us use for free or for a minimal fee, it will be most appreciated.  If not, you can suggest a venue we can rent, and we can just split the fee among all the participants.  Ideal venues would be in Ortigas center or Makati, as it will be easier for particpants from the North and the South.

I am really looking forward to these classes and I hope more parents can join us.  I’m  also looking forward to your messages.  Have a nice day and let’s all be safe.  In the meantime, here are some important numbers you can keep in your phone book.

Goodbye and Thank you, Angelo Reyes

14 Feb

Yesterday, my husband and I joined the family and friends of Gen. Angelo Reyes in laying him to his final resting place.  For the past couple of days, we’ve been going to the wake and attending the masses and services.  I’ve heard numerous speakers talking about his intelligence and his achievements.  But what stood out is what a compassionate and honorable man he was.

I have been very emotional the past few days, I haven’t worked well in a week…  I am angry.   I am so frustrated by all these people casting judgement on him even after his death.  I am so mad at the people posting all these mean comments about him and his family on facebook.  Hey people did you know him?  Did you really know what’s going on?  Or did you just believe everything you saw on TV?  Did you just swallow everything- hook, line and sinker?!

The media is a very powerful tool.  Even the priest who officiated one of the masses (Fr. Aguas, a Jesuit priest) admitted that he too was swayed by the media, he too got mad at Angie Reyes.  And he apolopogized for casting judgement.  As the Lord said, “Those of you who has not sinned cast the first stone…”.  I was so moved by the sermon of Father Aguas.  He pointed out how simple Angelo Reyes’ family is, how respectful the sons are.  I myself can attest to this, they call everyone sir, even the soldiers of lowest rank.  They were taught by their father well.  The sons all have jobs of their own, the daughters-in-law also work for a living, and even Angie’s wife has her own business.  This is a far cry from the excessive lifestyle of other government officials’ and politician’s family, even Garcia’s family.   My husband and I are very close to Bogie and Kim (Angie Reyes’ son and daughter-in-law), my husband knew Bogie back when Angie Reyes was just a one-star general.  After he was appointed chief of Staff, nothing changed, they did not become “mayabang”, nor did we ever hear them using their father’s position to gain favors for themselves.  I never saw them throw their weight around.    They don’t drive around in fancy sports cars nor do the kids live in exclusive villages.  Now tell me are these what you will call the trappings of ill-gotten wealth?!  Ang hirap sa iba, nakikisali, comment ng comment wala namang alam!  As Fr. Aguas said… “Huwag magmalinis at magbanalbanalan… and if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all…”.  Bago kayo magsalita… ask yourself, what have YOU done for your country?

Father Aguas also commented that Angelo Reyes did not ask anything for himself during Edsa Dos.  He only asked 2 things from GMA – good governance and graceful exit for the Estrada family.  This was also attested to by Rex Robles, who also mentioned that the reason Reyes resigned from DILG was because he can’t find it in his heart to put Erap in prison.  Maybe that’s his fault, he is too kind, too soft-hearted….

Angie Reyes is also a dedicated public servant, when he was heading the Anti-Kidnapping, he did not just do his job well, he did it with compassion.  He was genuinely concerned about the victims and their families.  Teresita Ang See shared that there was one Christmas that Reyes did not even go home to celebrate Christmas with his own family and instead stayed with the victim’s family until the 2 1/2 yr old child was rescued.   He did this not because he had to, but because he wanted to.  Maybe if this present administration had him in its Anti-kidnapping or anti-crime division, we won’t be having all these unsolved crimes.  To P-Noy: “Mr. President… can we pls be more aggressive in the eradication of crimes like the very rampant carnappings, carjackings and kidnappings!!! Sobra na ito! Wala ng takot ang mga criminal.  Are u even aware of these? They are more bold and fearless na. Maybe our lawmakers should pass and implement new laws to better protect the citizens of our country.”

These past few days, I was overwhelmed to see the long lines of people, paying their respect to this great man.  I myself am moved by his humility, patience and huge capacity to love.  One good example is his love for his mother.  All of us love our parents, but how many of us are patient enough to have lunch or dinner with them everyday, visit them everyday before going home to our own families?  And he did these in spite of his full schedule.  I was also moved upon seeing military men, men hardened by battle, with tears in their eyes.  I was deeply moved on seeing ordinary citizens lining up late into the night just to see their beloved Angelo Reyes.

People can have different opinions and it’s a fact that we can’t please everybody.  I’ve also realized that a lot of people are judgemental, some even downright self righteous. I just find it unfair that some people will just judge him just because he was a part of the Arroyo administration… I myself don’t like Gloria, but I love tito Angie, because we’ve seen the “REAL” him. And most people haven’t had that privilege, so they only believe what they’ve seen on TV and newspapers.  Because of Gloria, his name was dragged thru the mud. But come to think of it… what if there was no Edsa 2? They would have judged him badly too if he stood by Erap. So Angelo Reyes was in a no-win situation right from the start.  It seemed that in spite of all the good things he had done, he was fated to be hated.  Maybe that was his sad fate. God has his way of doing things. Maybe it’s an eye opener or maybe his death will result to questions that will open closets, expose some skeletons and expose the light of truth.

They are saying that he was being investigated for corruption. Why don’t we as a people clamor for the investigation and lifestyle check of everybody in government?  Why just focus sa AFP, why don’t we include everybody… starting from the highest places… cabinet members, senators, etc. No use in starting with the small fishes… they will just be used as sacrificial lambs, being thrown into a blood thirsty crowd… For the people crucifying Angelo Reyes… remember, we all live in glass houses. So I guess the question is… who’s gonna do the checking? Are those doing the investigating & questioning people with unstained records, are they morally upright, are they really as “clean” as they want us all to believe? Maybe we, the people should also think about that.

As for me, I salute General Angelo Reyes and I am thankful to his family for unselfishly sharing this great man with us.

Sons salute their father / family and friends mourn
